Obesity Open Education Resource
for Physiotherapy

Welcome to the PROMINENCE (Promoting Obesity and Metabolic Rehabilitation INclusion in EU Entry-level Physiotherapy Curricula) Obesity Open Education Resource (OER).

This OER has been developed by the transnational PROMINENCE team to support physiotherapy educators in delivering evidence-based education regarding obesity for entry-level physiotherapy students. Physiotherapists currently practising may also find this OER valuable.

Whilst the PROMINENCE needs analysis (scoping review of literature, higher education survey) and the PROMINENCE Competencies Framework are broader and reflect the need for a lifespan approach
to obesity and the important role of physiotherapists in childhood obesity, the focus of this PROMINENCE OER is on the management of obesity in adults.

This Open Education Resource is organised in five sections, to correspond with the PROMINENCE Obesity Competency Framework domains for entry-level physiotherapy programmes.

The OER includes newly developed PROMINENCE learning resources and selected existing evidence-based obesity-relevant resources to support achievement of the identified obesity competencies. Physiotherapy educators are encouraged to utilise these resources in delivery of their entry-level physiotherapy programme. Educators will need to decide how best to integrate these resources into their existing curriculum. It is assumed that physiotherapy educators will recognise that learning relevant
to comprehensive evidence-based physiotherapy for people living with obesity will also require teaching

and resources beyond this OER (e.g., resources related to cardiac disease, diabetes, professional practice, evidence review, psychology).

Note 1: The PROMINENCE Obesity OER content approved by PROMINENCE team as of 24 March 2026. This Obesity OER is current at the time of publication; however, as evidence and physiotherapy practice continue to evolve, users are advised to consult the latest available resources and guidance.

Note 2: Language and terminology relating to obesity is evolving all the time as our understanding
of obesity evolves. The PROMINENCE team advocates for the use of ‘Person First’ language.
However, many resources and references will have used language now considered outdated.
