Health Promotion and Obesity
Physiotherapists have a key role to play in health promotion be that in primary prevention of obesity
in the general population (from childhood into adulthood) or health promotion for people living
with obesity to help manage obesity and/or prevent and manage the related medical complications.
Health promotion competencies will be developed across many modules in entry-level physiotherapy programmes and then can be cross applied for many different clinical patient groups/cohorts.
Health promotion as it relates to obesity will - by necessity - include promotion of a healthy lifestyle
to include healthy eating, meeting physical activity recommendations, good quality and sufficient levels of sleep and stress management. The main concept is individuality, and how people can affect these with their daily choices.
This OER includes a selection of resources which physiotherapy educators may find useful in addressing health promotion, as it relates to obesity, but the PROMINENCE team acknowledges that not all necessary aspects are covered (i.e., resource list not exhaustive). Learners are advised to also explore additional resources, which are commonly used in health promotion campaigns - particularly those focused on healthy eating, active living, and obesity prevention.
